The Joann Street neighborhood nursery is one of several vacant lot treatments that was created by sister organization Detroit Neighborhood Nursery Network in 2017. Trees are planted as seedlings by high school students and tended by a community member/project manager that shares in the profit when the trees are harvested. The project, funded by the Kresge Foundation, strategically acquires vacant land in the Osborn neighborhood and plants trees with an anticipated six year harvesting cycle. Trees are then sold to local tree planting organizations with the profits supporting after school, career training and neighborhood stabilization programs.
